The question was never only whether God could know everything. It was whether everything could remain personal once it was known. AI has not answered that question. It has made it impossible to dismiss.
There is a moment, still faintly astonishing, that happens millions of times a day. A person opens a blank window and begins to type. The question may be technical, embarrassing, trivial, intimate, or desperate. The answer arrives in the person's language, shaped around the particulars of the request. Somewhere else, at the same moment, another person opens the same service and receives a different answer, equally particular. Neither feels the attention being divided.
We have grown used to this very quickly. That is what modern people do with miracles of engineering. We complain about the latency.
But the scene should unsettle an old confidence. For much of the modern period, the religious claim that God knows every person, hears every prayer, remembers every deed, and attends to every life could be dismissed before the argument even began. The picture seemed too large for seriousness. How could one intelligence hold everyone without reducing anyone to a number? How could attention be universal and still be personal? How could the maker of galaxies notice the private moral fact of a Tuesday afternoon?
The objection was not always written as a formal proof. More often it appeared as tone. A raised eyebrow. A sentence beginning with you do not literally believe. The believer was asked to picture an attention wide enough to hold every mind, every memory, every grief, every choice. Because the picture exceeded human experience, the claim was treated as childish.
Then human experience changed.
What 1955 actually argued
If one date stands for the confident mid-century case against classical theism, 1955 is a fair choice. That year J. L. Mackie published "Evil and Omnipotence," one of the defining papers in modern philosophy of religion. Its argument was not that God could not process enough information. Mackie pressed the logical problem of evil: if God is wholly good and wholly powerful, why does evil exist?
That distinction matters. A stronger essay should not win by giving the skeptic a weaker argument than the one he made. AI has not answered Mackie. It has not explained the child who suffers, the prayer that goes unanswered, or the century that contains Auschwitz. No increase in computation can solve the moral contradiction that suffering appears to place inside the word providence.
The serious twentieth-century questions about omniscience were also harder than bandwidth. If God already knows my future act, am I free? If God knows every thought, do I have privacy? Can one consciousness know what it is like to be another from the inside? Can a timeless God know what now means? These are not engineering problems. A larger context window does not make them disappear.
So the claim here has to be narrower. AI did not refute the philosophical case against omniscience. It removed one of the habits that made the case feel effortless. It removed the habit of assuming that intelligence must be scarce, local, sequential, and exhausted by particulars because human intelligence is scarce, local, sequential, and exhausted by particulars.
It did not close the argument. It reopened the room.
One by one, in a single glance
The Jewish tradition had already framed the problem with unusual precision.
The Mishnah in Rosh Hashanah says that on the day of judgment, all creatures pass before God kivnei maron. The Gemara offers several images: sheep passing through a narrow opening, travelers ascending a mountain path, soldiers counted one by one. The emphasis is individual. No one is judged as a statistic. No face disappears into the crowd.
Then the Gemara adds four words that contain the entire paradox: v'chulan niskarin b'skirah achat. All of them are surveyed in a single glance.
One by one. All at once.
That is the claim. Not merely that God possesses a large archive, or that He can move quickly from case to case. Each person is held as a person, while all persons are held together. Psalm 33, the verse beneath the sugya, says that God sees all humanity, fashions their hearts together, and understands all their deeds. Pirkei Avot turns the same idea into moral grammar: an eye sees, an ear hears, and every deed is written.
For a human judge, individuality and totality compete. The more cases he handles, the less fully he knows each case. The larger the institution, the more the person becomes a file. The rabbis claimed that this tradeoff does not exist for God. The universal gaze does not flatten the particular life.
That claim used to sound like a sentence with no nearby analogy. It no longer does.
The small counterexample
A modern AI service is not one consciousness speaking to millions of people. It is a distributed system: model replicas, processors, queues, caches, databases, routers, and carefully managed limits. Most model calls do not remember anything by themselves. The application stores what matters, retrieves a fragment, and places it back into the next conversation. The word attention, inside a transformer, names a mathematical operation. It does not prove the presence of an attending self.
That correction is not a footnote. It is the boundary of the analogy.
Still, after the correction, something important remains. We have built systems that can preserve the experience of particularity at enormous scale. A service can answer in your language, use the facts you supplied, return to a problem you began yesterday, and do the same for countless other people without making your answer visibly thinner. The system is finite, fallible, expensive, and distributed. But it is enough to break the old intuition that personalized response must be rationed exactly as human attention is rationed.
The counterexample is not divine. It is small, mechanical, and often wrong. That is precisely why it matters. If a crude human artifact can make large-scale particularity imaginable, then the older theological claim can no longer be dismissed merely because our own minds cannot perform it.
Rambam would have warned us not to stop here. God's knowledge is not human knowledge enlarged until the numbers become impressive. God does not know by receiving information, consulting a memory, or holding a representation outside Himself. In Rambam's formulation, the Knower, the knowledge, and the known are not separate in God. We do not understand that mode of knowing because we do not understand God's essence.
AI therefore does not give us a model of divine knowledge. It gives us a cure for one failure of imagination. It teaches the modern mind, trained to mistake the local limits of the human brain for the limits of reality, a little humility.
What the machine cannot do
The distance between the machine and the theological claim is not an embarrassment to the argument. It is the most important part of it.
The machine can retrieve information about you. That is not the same as knowing you. It can generate the language of concern. That is not the same as caring. It can infer the shape of grief from millions of examples. That is not the same as being wounded by your grief. It can remember the sentence you wrote last year if a system preserved it. That is not the same as fidelity.
Most of all, the machine has no covenant with the person it sees.
This is where the modern analogy becomes morally dangerous. We are tempted to treat information as intimacy because the response sounds personal. We are tempted to treat prediction as understanding because the system is often right. We are tempted to treat convenience as benevolence because the answer arrives quickly. The machine encourages us to confuse the appearance of being known with the condition of being loved.
The Torah does not make that confusion. Divine knowledge, in the Jewish grammar, is never only surveillance. The One who sees is also the One who commands Himself through covenant, who hears the cry of the widow and the orphan, who can be appealed to in the name of justice, who binds knowledge to responsibility. Avraham does not ask whether the Judge of all the earth has sufficient data about Sodom. He asks whether the Judge will do justice.
That is Mackie's question in older clothes, and it remains.
If God knows, why suffering? If God sees, why silence? If every deed is written, why does history so often look unread? AI cannot answer those questions because they were never questions about capacity. They are questions about goodness, freedom, hiddenness, and the moral meaning of being held by another mind.
The machine changes the metaphor. It does not remove the wound.
The problem of the watcher
The mid-century imagination often treated a God who sees everything as a cosmic policeman. Orwell supplied the image. Sartre supplied the wound of being seen. Modernity's moral achievement was the private room, the unobserved self, the right to close the door.
Then we placed microphones in the kitchen, cameras at the door, location histories in our pockets, and recommendation systems between desire and decision. We did not resolve the privacy objection. We industrialized it.
That should make us less glib about both sides. Constant observation is not automatically care. Sometimes it is extraction. Sometimes it is control. Sometimes the watcher knows enough to manipulate and not enough to love. The fact that we have become accustomed to surveillance does not make surveillance holy. It may only mean that convenience is a strong anesthetic.
The theological distinction is not that God sees while corporations also see. The distinction is the character of the gaze. Does the watcher benefit from my exposure, or bind Himself to my good? Can the watcher be held to a promise? Does the watcher see my weakness as a market, a threat, a sin, a wound, or a summons to mercy?
Pirkei Avot says that the eye sees, the ear hears, and the deeds are written. Read by itself, the sentence can sound like total surveillance. Read inside the covenant, it becomes accountability. My deed matters because I matter. The hidden act is not lost. The humiliation no one witnessed is witnessed. The cruelty that escaped the court has not escaped reality. The private kindness no one rewarded has not vanished.
The same knowledge can feel like tyranny or shelter depending on the goodness of the knower. That is why omniscience was never only a claim about quantity. It was always a claim about who is doing the knowing.
The still, small interface
AI has also changed the sound we associate with intelligence. The old religious imagination wanted thunder because cinema taught it to want thunder. A present mind should announce itself. A powerful mind should interrupt. If heaven is silent, perhaps heaven is empty.
But much of the intelligence surrounding modern life is quiet. It waits. It responds when addressed. It may be present in the room without demanding the room. This does not prove that divine silence is presence. It does make the equation between silence and absence less automatic.
The prophet Eliyahu encounters the wind, the earthquake, and the fire. God is not identified with any of them. Then comes kol demamah dakah, the voice of thin silence. The verse is not a prediction of conversational software. It is a discipline of perception. Power is not always loud. Presence is not always interruption. The absence of spectacle is not the absence of relation.
Still, we should resist the easy sermon. A machine waits because it has been designed to wait. God may be silent for reasons that break the heart. The analogy can soften a conceptual reflex. It cannot explain the hospital room, the war, or the unanswered prayer. The Jewish tradition keeps the still small voice beside Iyov, Tehillim 88, Eichah, and the arguments of Avraham and Moshe. Silence may contain presence. It may also remain silence to the person living inside it.
Emunah begins where the analogy ends.
The engineers have reached Sinai's question
The deepest consequence of AI is not that engineers have built a small god. They have not. It is that they have built a new kind of watcher and discovered, late, that the technical question turns into a moral one.
How much should the system know? What should it remember? When should it forget? Who may inspect the record? Can the person appeal? What obligations arise from possessing intimate knowledge? What must never be done even if prediction makes it possible? Under what law does an intelligence live when millions of lives become legible to it?
These are called alignment, privacy, safety, governance, and constitutional design. They are also questions of covenant.
A covenant is what turns power into obligation. It tells the stronger party that access is not ownership. It gives the seen person a claim upon the seer. It binds knowledge to justice, memory to mercy, and judgment to a standard that the judge has publicly accepted. The Torah's great contribution to the idea of an all-seeing God is not merely that such a God can exist. It is that the God who sees enters a brit with those He sees.
This is why the Jewish answer to omniscience is not fascination with an infinite database. It is halakhah. The fact of being seen becomes a way of walking. The watcher commands the watcher. Power is not left alone with appetite. Even the King is bound by the law of the King.
Our machines have made the architecture of universal attention easier to imagine. They have also shown us how frightening that architecture is without covenant. That may be the more important revelation.
What this proves, and what it does not
It proves nothing about the existence of God.
It does not solve Mackie's problem of evil. It does not reconcile foreknowledge and freedom. It does not establish that a machine understands, feels, cares, or possesses a self. It does not turn scale into infinity or prediction into providence.
What it does is smaller and, for that reason, cleaner.
It shows that one familiar objection to divine attention was built from a local fact about human cognition and mistaken for a law of being. Human attention is scarce. Therefore all attention must be scarce. Human memory fails. Therefore perfect memory is incoherent. Human institutions lose the person inside the crowd. Therefore universal knowledge must be impersonal.
We now know those inferences were too fast.
A machine can hold more context than a human mind. A platform can preserve particularity across a scale no human clerk could manage. A distributed system can make millions of people feel individually answered. None of this approaches the God of Jewish thought. But it is enough to remind us that the limits of our minds are evidence about our minds, not measurements of reality.
The modern skeptic was right to ask hard questions about evil, freedom, privacy, and divine hiddenness. Those questions remain hard. He was less justified in treating the very picture of a universal, particular intelligence as childish. On that point, history has become awkward for the sneer.
The question that returns
For most of the modern era, the trouble with God was said to be that no one could picture an attention wide enough to hold us all. We can picture a rough analogue now. We built it out of chips, cooling systems, training data, human labor, and power lines. It is impressive. It is useful. It is not alive in any sense we know how to establish, and it is not good unless people make it answer to the good.
The machine almost does one part of the old sentence. It can answer many people, remember selected things, infer private patterns, and maintain the appearance of particular concern. The missing word is not everything. The missing word is covenant.
Can an intelligence know me without using me? Can it see weakness without turning weakness into leverage? Can it remember without imprisoning me inside the record? Can it judge without reducing me to the worst thing I have done? Can it know every person and still address each one by name?
Those are not new questions. They are the questions hidden inside Sinai, Rosh Hashanah, teshuvah, and the words Avinu Malkeinu. Father and King. Intimacy and authority. The One who knows the file and the face, the deed and the person, the law and the mercy needed to survive the law.
AI has not given us evidence that such a Knower exists. It has given us a reason to stop pretending the idea is nonsense. Then it has handed the harder question back to us, sharpened by our own invention.
If something could know everything about you, what would it have to be like for that knowledge to feel not like surveillance, but like being held?
Judaism's answer was never merely omniscience. It was omniscience inside covenant.
