The God who knew everything, and the machine that almost does

AI did not prove divine omniscience. It did something stranger: it made personalized intelligence at immense scale feel ordinary, then showed us why scale was never the hardest part.

AI made one old idea easier to imagine. It made the harder question impossible to avoid: what kind of knower could know everything without turning a person into a thing?

A small event, still faintly astonishing, happens millions of times a day. A person opens a blank window and types something technical, embarrassing, trivial, intimate, or desperate. The answer arrives in that person's language and takes account of the particulars. At the same moment, someone elsewhere receives a different answer, equally particular. Neither sees a clerk look up from another file. Neither feels the attention being divided.

We adapted with indecent speed. The miracle became a utility, and then a utility with annoying latency.

Yet the ordinary chat window has disturbed an old confidence. For much of the modern period, the claim that God knows every person, hears every prayer, remembers every deed, and attends to every life could be dismissed before the argument began. The picture seemed too large to be serious. How could one intelligence hold everyone without reducing anyone to a number? How could the maker of galaxies notice the private moral fact of a Tuesday afternoon?

The objection usually arrived as tone rather than proof. A raised eyebrow. A sentence beginning with you do not literally believe. Human attention is local, sequential, and quickly exhausted by particulars. We assumed attention itself must be the same.

Then we built machines that can answer millions of people without making each answer seem less personal.

They did not prove God. They did something more useful: they separated two questions we had been running together. Can intelligence respond to the many without visibly losing the one? And what would make such knowledge a form of care rather than surveillance?

AI has changed the first question. It has made the second one harder to avoid.

The objection AI actually weakened

The strongest modern objections to God were never about bandwidth. In 1955, J. L. Mackie published "Evil and Omnipotence," one of the defining papers in modern philosophy of religion. His question was moral: if God is wholly good and wholly powerful, why does evil exist?

AI has no answer for the child who suffers, the prayer that goes unanswered, or the century that contains Auschwitz. More computation does not repair the apparent contradiction that suffering places inside the word providence.

The other serious questions about omniscience remain just as difficult. If God already knows my future act, am I free? If every thought is known, do I have privacy? Can one consciousness know what it is like to be another from the inside? Can a timeless God know what now means? A larger context window does not touch any of these problems.

The exact claim is modest. AI leaves the philosophical case against divine omniscience intact. It invalidates one lazy inference inside it: human attention is scarce, therefore personal attention at universal scale is incoherent.

That inference once traveled disguised as common sense. It now has to argue for itself.

One by one, in a single glance

The Jewish tradition framed this problem with unusual precision.

The Mishnah in Rosh Hashanah says that on the day of judgment all creatures pass before God kivnei maron. The Gemara offers several images: sheep moving through a narrow opening, travelers ascending a mountain path, soldiers counted one by one. No one is judged as a statistic. No face disappears into the crowd.

Then the Gemara adds four words that contain the paradox: v'chulan niskarin b'skirah achat. All of them are surveyed in a single glance.

One by one. All at once.

The claim is larger than an infinite archive. God does not move very quickly from one case to the next. Each person is held as a person while all persons are held together. Psalm 33, the verse beneath the sugya, says that God sees all humanity, fashions their hearts together, and understands all their deeds. Pirkei Avot gives the same idea a moral grammar: an eye sees, an ear hears, and every deed is written.

For a human judge, totality competes with particularity. More cases mean thinner knowledge of each case. A larger institution turns the person into a file. Chazal claimed that this tradeoff does not exist for God. The universal gaze does not flatten the particular life.

For centuries, that sentence had no nearby analogy. Now it has a small and dangerous one.

The small counterexample

A modern AI service is not one consciousness speaking to millions of people. It is a distributed system made of model replicas, processors, queues, caches, databases, routers, and carefully managed limits. Most model calls remember nothing by themselves. An application stores selected facts, retrieves a fragment, and places it into a later conversation. The word attention inside a transformer names a mathematical operation. It does not establish an attending self.

This correction marks the boundary of the analogy.

After the correction, one fact remains. We have built systems that preserve the experience of particular response at enormous scale. A service can answer in your language, use details you supplied, return to a problem you began yesterday, and do something similar for countless other people without making your answer visibly thinner. It is finite, fallible, expensive, and distributed. It is still enough to break the intuition that personalized response must be rationed exactly as human attention is rationed.

Imagine describing the ordinary chat window to a philosopher in 1955. It would not prove God to him. It would, however, ruin one confident sentence: no intelligence could address millions of people as individuals because no mind could contain that many particulars.

Rambam would stop us before the analogy became idolatry. God's knowledge is not human knowledge enlarged until the numbers become impressive. God does not receive information, consult memory, or hold a representation outside Himself. In Rambam's formulation, the Knower, the knowledge, and the known are not separate in God. We cannot understand that mode of knowing because we do not understand God's essence.

AI is no model of divine knowledge. Its smaller gift is an antidote to provincialism. The limits of a human brain are facts about a human brain, not measurements of reality.

AI made universal response easier to imagine. It also showed why omniscience without goodness would be a nightmare. The turn in the argument

A file is not a face

The distance between machine knowledge and the theological claim is where the essay becomes interesting.

A system can retrieve facts about you without knowing you. It can generate the language of concern without caring. It can infer grief from millions of examples without being wounded by your grief. It can preserve a sentence you wrote last year without being faithful to you.

A database contains information. A covenant creates obligation.

This distinction is easy to miss because a fluent response feels intimate. Prediction starts to look like understanding. Convenience starts to look like benevolence. The appearance of being known can be produced without the condition of being loved.

The Torah refuses that confusion. Divine knowledge in Jewish thought is never a spectator's knowledge. The One who sees also hears the cry of the widow and the orphan. He can be addressed in the name of justice. Avraham does not ask whether the Judge of all the earth has enough data about Sodom. He asks whether the Judge will do justice.

This returns us to Mackie in a stronger form. If God knows, why suffering? If God sees, why silence? If every deed is written, why does history so often look unread? The suffering child does not become less of a scandal because an information system can count every child.

These were never questions of capacity. They are questions about goodness, freedom, hiddenness, and the moral meaning of being held in another mind. The machine changes what we can picture. It cannot tell us whom we can trust.

The old fear returned as a product

The mid-century imagination often pictured an all-seeing God as a cosmic policeman. Orwell supplied the image. Sartre supplied the wound of being seen. Modernity defended the private room, the unobserved self, and the right to close the door.

Then we put microphones in the kitchen, cameras at the door, location histories in our pockets, and recommendation systems between desire and decision. We did not resolve the privacy objection. We turned it into a business model.

AI has taught us that being known can feel like a service while still functioning as extraction. Personalization can be intimate in form and indifferent in purpose. A watcher may know enough to manipulate and not enough to love. Our comfort with surveillance may reveal only that convenience is a powerful anesthetic.

The theological issue is the character of the gaze. Does the watcher profit from my exposure or bind Himself to my good? Does He see weakness as leverage, threat, sin, wound, or a summons to mercy? Can the seen person make a claim on the seer?

Pirkei Avot says that the eye sees, the ear hears, and the deeds are written. Taken alone, the sentence can sound like total surveillance. Inside covenant, it becomes accountability. The cruelty that escaped the court has not escaped reality. The private kindness no one rewarded has not vanished. The humiliation no one witnessed was witnessed.

The goodness of the knower changes the meaning of being known. Omniscience was never only a claim about quantity. It was always a claim about character.

Silence is not evidence either way

AI disturbs another modern reflex. We expected a present intelligence to announce itself. Power should sound like thunder. If heaven is silent, perhaps heaven is empty.

Much of the intelligence surrounding modern life is quiet. It waits. It responds when addressed. This does not prove that divine silence is presence. It reveals only the weakness of the reverse claim: silence by itself cannot prove absence.

The prophet Eliyahu encounters the wind, the earthquake, and the fire. God is not identified with any of them. Then comes kol demamah dakah, the voice of thin silence. The verse is not a prediction of conversational software. It is a discipline of perception. Power need not be loud. Presence need not interrupt.

Conceptual room is not consolation. A machine waits because it was designed to wait. Divine silence can break the heart. The analogy cannot explain the hospital room, the war, or the unanswered prayer. Jewish tradition keeps the still small voice beside Iyov, Tehillim 88, Eichah, and the arguments of Avraham and Moshe. Silence may contain presence. To the person living inside it, silence may remain silence.

Emunah begins where the analogy can carry us no farther.

The engineers reached Sinai's question

Engineers did not build a small god. They built a new kind of watcher and discovered that every technical question eventually becomes a moral one.

They must decide how much a system may know, what it may remember, when it must forget, who may inspect the record, whether the person may appeal, and what must never be done even when prediction makes it possible. Possessing intimate knowledge creates obligations. The only question is whether those obligations will be named and enforced.

We call this alignment, privacy, safety, governance, and constitutional design. Torah has an older word for the structure that binds power to obligation: brit.

A covenant tells the stronger party that access is not ownership. It gives the seen person a claim upon the seer. It binds knowledge to justice, memory to mercy, and judgment to a public standard. The Torah's great contribution to the idea of an all-seeing God is covenant itself: the God who sees binds Himself to those He sees.

This is why the Jewish answer to omniscience is halakhah rather than fascination with an infinite database. The fact of being seen becomes a way of walking. Power does not remain alone with appetite. Even the King is bound by the law of the King.

The engineers have reached Sinai's question. The question is no longer whether an intelligence can make millions of lives legible. It is what law should govern an intelligence once they are.

What changed

Nothing here proves that God exists.

AI does not solve Mackie's problem of evil. It does not reconcile foreknowledge and freedom. It does not establish that a machine understands, feels, cares, or possesses a self. Scale is not infinity. Prediction is not providence.

What changed is smaller and cleaner. Several intuitions no longer deserve to pass as arguments.

Human attention is scarce, but that does not make all attention scarce. Human memory fails, but that does not make perfect memory incoherent. Human institutions lose the person inside the crowd, but that does not prove universal knowledge must be impersonal. Those conclusions were smuggled out of facts about us.

A machine can hold more context than a human mind. A platform can preserve particular response across a scale no human clerk could manage. A distributed system can make millions of people feel individually answered. None of this approaches the God of Jewish thought. It does show that our cognitive limits are not laws of being.

The modern skeptic keeps the hard case against God: evil, freedom, privacy, and hiddenness. He loses the easy sneer. A universal, particular intelligence is no longer an idea we can dismiss simply because we cannot perform it ourselves.

The question behind omniscience

Suppose something knew every search you made, every sentence you deleted, every fear you disguised as a technical question, every promise you kept, and every promise you quietly broke. What would have to be true before that knowledge felt like care?

The knower could not use your weakness as leverage. It could not imprison you inside the record. It would have to see both the deed and the person, to judge without reducing you to the worst thing you had done, and to bind its power to your good.

These questions are already present in Sinai, Rosh Hashanah, teshuvah, and the words Avinu Malkeinu. Father and King. Intimacy and authority. The One who knows the file and the face, the act and the person, the law and the mercy needed to survive the law.

AI has made the scale of the old claim easier to picture. It has made the moral content of the claim harder to ignore. The machine can simulate concern without accepting an obligation to the person before it. The God of Jewish thought is defined by precisely that obligation.

This does not establish that such a Knower exists. It tells us what the word God would have to mean for omniscience to be anything other than perfect surveillance.

The missing word was never everything. It was covenant.

The machine can answer when I call. Emunah begins with the possibility that before I call, before I find the words, I am already known. AI has made scale easier to imagine. It has not crossed the distance from information to fidelity. That distance has a Jewish name: covenant.
